“You are my friends if you do what I command.” John 15:14
For service this Sunday, we were asked to bring some gently worn shoes and socks for an organization called Soles4Souls. Check out their website here. This organization is amazing; they have donated over 16 million shoes to kids and adults around the world. We also donated some new socks to our church for an upcoming New York Mission Trip. On this trip they will serve the homeless and give them socks. It felt great to be able to give to someone who was less fortunate. I do believe that it’s important to give to those who are in need, because we have been blessed with so much more than we deserve. All of those shoes sitting in our closet were not getting used, so what better way to get them off of the shelf than to give.
We were in for a real surprise during service.
The service started off as usual, with some music. After about the first 10 minutes of music there was a little talking and then out came a band…John Mark McMillan, that is. I had never heard his music before, but it sure was some good stuff.
This song was my favorite, it’s called How He Love Us.
My favorite line was: “I don’t have time to maintain these regrets when I think about the way. Oh how he loves us.”
The service ended with a young man telling his story of how he was born and raised in the slums of Kenya. When he was young he was sponsored by an organization called Compassion. By being sponsored he was able to stay healthy, graduate from high school, and college. This young man now lives in Colorado and he made his way out of the slums by what he says was made possible by God. If it weren’t for God he would not have been sponsored and he is left to wonder where is life may have ended up. We will be sponsoring a child with the hopes of helping someone to become successful like this young man was. His story was so touching and I can’t wait to help someone else. I wish that I could help more than just one, but if you’re interested in helping a child some where in this world please click here for more information.
Next week, we start focusing on a new scripture and a new message called 5.
